Bead Making Experiment July 2009

The teapot mark II heating. At the top is an arch over the chimney. This arch is designed to reduce wind flow through the working area and partially assist in containing the heat. The loose fit of the crucible was one of two problems that eventually lead us to abandon this design for the day. Too much heat was escaping around the crucible. The other problem was that the furnace very rapidly burned through its charcoal load - at least the part directly in front of the air flow. The remaining charcoal piled inside the chamber didn't move down to fill the void suggesing that a conical base would work better. Again through this would be different from the archaeology which has only flat bases.
