The ash collecting at the bottom of the air port is clearly visible. At the bottom of the port the ash/charcoal is so cool it is black, while only in the upper part to we see the bright red we want to see. Almost 50% of the inlet is blocked. Given that the opening is 9x5cm guesses as to the size of the charcoal at this point can also be made. The input is unsized charcoal (straight out of the bag) likely averaging 5cm diameter. Yet here we can see several pieces fitting in that 5cm width. The smaller size of the charcoal will make for less gap between pieces, making it harder for the air to penetrate the mass.
