Bead Making Experiment July 2009

« large pic
The unfortunate side effect of the production process. Broken beads. About 1/3 of the beads broke, almost entirely while being removed from the mandrel. A number of possible causes are being explored including: trying to remove them while they are too hot, non-tapered mandrels, and the actual shape. Notice how many of these beads have long tails of glass on both ends leading to increased stress while removing them. At least it is good to note that this longitudinal breakage is quite common in the record.
