Bead Making Experiment July 18 2009

« large pic »
Viking era beads are found in a variety of shapes. Here Jean is using a block of soapstone to work the glass into a bi-cone shape (Callmer shape 132). No evidence exists for the soapstone marver (shaper) but these blocks are small enough they may be a normal part of the toolchest of a beadworker and thus taken home at the end of each season. No such bead maker's toolchest has yet been found.
