Bead Making Experiment July 18 2009

« large pic »
When working with tesserae the first step is to heat the glass. In this case this is done by placing a piece of charcoal inside the furnace. This cool charcoal temporarily cools the one side of the tesserae while the other side is heated by the hot gasses. this allows the glass to be worked without binding to the charcoal. Of course if it is left too long the glass will fuse to the charcoal and can no longer be worked.
