Iron Experiment - July 2011

large pic »
Dr. Ross of WLU after finishing up the work to reduce the charcoal to a consistant size. Sizing charcoal is an important task as the size of the charcoal along with the air-flow controls the time the ore remains in the column. Too small and it burns too fast. Too large and the ore slides around it, or it sets up arches that "hold" and the drop the ore. The smelter itself can be seen in the background.
