The furnace itself was sitting on a thermal plate, this helps protect the ground and acts as a travelling support for the furnace. Obviously the original would not have had this luxury. Here it is easy to see that the heat pattern has been transfered onto the ground below. It would be interesting to check under the pieces form Ribe to see if this pattern is also there.
